| 2 |  | Taiwan is not the same as the People’s Republic of China. Taiwan has resisted decades of authoritarian communism and built a pluralistic, democratic society. The most sustainable path for the mainland is to follow Taiwan’s example: dismantle one-party rule and adopt democratic institutions and rule of law. I believe Han Chinese people have the capacity to make that change — history shows cultural and political transformation is possible — yet real reform often unfolds slowly, across generations.
